EPF Scheme 2026: Got Married? Your Old PF Nomination Becomes Invalid – Know New EPFO Nomination Rules, e-Nomination Process & FAQs

Millions of salaried employees in India contribute to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) every month. But many don’t know that a significant life event such as marriage might have a direct bearing on their PF nomination. EPF nomination made before marriage does not stay valid if a member comes to have a “family” under the EPF Scheme 2026.

If you were not married when you joined your job and nominated your parents or siblings or any other individual, your earlier nomination may immediately become invalid after marriage. If you don’t register a fresh nomination, then your EPF benefits may get delayed at the time of settlement and may even lead to legal hassles among family members.

After marriage, financial experts suggest that all salaried individuals should check and change their EPF nomination to guarantee that their retirement assets are passed seamlessly to the appropriate recipients.

What Is the New EPF Scheme 2026 Rule for PF Nomination?

According to the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 2026, whenever an EPF member gets married and forms a legally acknowledged family under the EPF rules, a nomination made prior to marriage is deemed to be invalid.

This rule aims to protect the immediate family members’ financial interest, as they are usually the first legal beneficiaries after marriage.

The new scheme puts more emphasis on the idea of “family” in deciding the legitimacy of nominations, says Siddharth Maurya, Managing Director, Vibhavangal Anukulkara Pvt Ltd.

He said that whenever an EPF member gets married, he should file a fresh nomination to ensure that the EPF balance reaches the designated recipients without undue delays.

Why Does Marriage Make Your Earlier EPF Nomination Invalid?

Family Becomes the Primary Beneficiary

An EPF member can designate any eligible person allowed under the plan before marriage. However, on marriage, the member is legally entitled to acquire a family under the EPF Scheme.

Consequently, most nominations in support of an outsider to the EPF-family are null and void. This legal rule acknowledges that marriage modifies a person’s financial duties and seeks to safeguard family members who depend on that individual.

Employees should thus not assume that the nomination filed on joining the organisation would continue to be valid during the course of their employment.

Who Can Be Nominated After Marriage Under EPF Scheme 2026?

Eligible Family Members for EPF Nomination
EPF members can nominate one or more eligible family members recognised under the EPF Scheme after marriage.

Nominees commonly eligible include:

  • Husband Wife Children
  • Parents who are dependent
  • Other eligible family members as permitted by EPF rules

An EPF account holder can also split their EPF balance among more than one nominee by mentioning the percentage share for each beneficiary.

For instance, a member might allocate:

  • 50% to spouse 25% to 1 child
  • 25% to a different child

This provides the employee options on how they want to use their retirement assets based on their family’s financial needs.

Why Updating Your EPF Nomination Is Important

Avoid Delays in PF Claim Settlement

An updated nomination assures the timely transfer of EPF benefits to the proper beneficiaries in case of the untimely demise of the member.

In absence of a legitimate nomination, the procedure of settlement of claim may take longer as EPFO may seek further documentation, succession certificates or verification of legal heirs before releasing the funds.

Family disputes also occur in such situations, delaying access to retirement resources when financial support is most needed.

Update Nomination After Every Major Life Event

The experts suggest you to update your EPF nomination each time you go through a major shift in your personal life like:

  • Marriage Divorce
  • Having a baby.
  • Children adopted
  • Death of nominee
  • Adding dependent family members

It should be a part of personal financial planning to keep nomination details up-to-date.

How to Update EPFO e-Nomination Online

Step-by-Step Process
Now, with the EPFO e-Nomination capability, updating your EPF nomination is quite easy.

Here’s how to get it done:

Step 1: Login to EPFO Member Portal using your Universal Account Number (UAN) and password.

Step 2: Your Aadhaar must be linked and confirmed with your UAN.

Step 3: Select E-Nomination from the Manage option.

Step 4: Give data of your eligible family members

Step 5: Add one or more nominees and enter the percentage share of each nominee.

Step 6: Fill Aadhaar based OTP verification.

Can You Still Submit a Physical EPF Nomination?

Yes. EPFO actively encourages its members to use the online e-Nomination option. However, in certain instances physical nomination may also be accepted either through the employer or the pertinent EPFO office according to applicable criteria.

However, online process is typically faster, more convenient and involves less paperwork.

Common Mistakes Employees Make Regarding PF Nomination
A lot of people do things wrong without knowing it. And these things can be problematic in the future. Some of the most typical mistakes are:

  • Never renewed nomination after marriage.
  • Assuming first nomination is valid forever.
  • Spouse or children not included.
  • Not checking Aadhar.
  • Not considering nominations if a nominee gets divorced or dies.
  • Distributing inaccurate percentage shares among nominees.

These problems can be avoided by regular checking of your EPF account.
