Delhi SIR: Getting an EC Notice Does Not Mean Your Name Will Be Deleted

The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer has clarified that receiving a notice during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls does not automatically mean that an elector’s name will be removed from the voter list.

The clarification came after reports that several prominent Delhi voters, including former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, were among the electors included in the list of around 33 lakh voters being sent notices over discrepancies or issues identified during the SIR exercise.

The CEO’s office said that the issuance of a notice is part of the verification and correction process. It does not itself constitute an order deleting a voter’s name from the electoral roll.

According to the Delhi CEO, no name can be deleted without giving the concerned elector an opportunity to present their case. Any deletion must follow due process and be supported by a proper, speaking and appealable order.

For readers following election-related developments, the issue is also relevant to understanding how electoral-roll verification works and how voters can check or correct their details.

What Is the Delhi SIR Exercise?

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was launched by the Election Commission of India in Delhi on May 14, 2026.

The stated objective of the exercise is to ensure that eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll while ineligible entries are identified and dealt with through the prescribed process.

During the exercise, voters submitted Enumeration Forms, with the information subsequently used in preparing the draft electoral roll.

The draft electoral roll was published on August 31, 2026.

The electoral roll is available for public inspection through the Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi website, offices of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and designated polling-station locations.

Why Are Delhi Voters Receiving SIR Notices?

According to the latest clarification from the Delhi CEO’s office, electors included in the draft roll have broadly been divided into two categories.

The first category consists of voters whose names, or whose progeny entries, could be linked with electoral rolls from the previous intensive revision.

The second category covers voters for whom such a link could not be established or where the linked information contained what the Election Commission described as “logical discrepancies.”

Notices are being sent to electors falling into these categories so that the relevant information can be examined and, where necessary, corrected.

The CEO’s office has also uploaded the list of electors who have received notices on the websites of the CEO Delhi, District Election Officers and Voter Centres.

Importantly, the Delhi CEO clarified that the system-generated notices are intended to facilitate correction and verification of data in ECINET.

Therefore, receiving a notice should not by itself be interpreted as a final decision regarding a voter’s eligibility.

No Voter Name Can Be Deleted Without Due Process

The Delhi CEO’s office has specifically reiterated that receiving an SIR notice does not mean that a voter’s name will automatically be removed from the electoral roll.

The electoral authorities said that a voter must first be given an opportunity to be heard.

A proper speaking and appealable order is also required before any deletion can take place.

This distinction is important because a notice is essentially part of the verification process, whereas deletion of a name is a formal administrative action that has to follow the prescribed procedure.

The CEO’s office also rejected reports suggesting that the notices had created an “existential crisis”, stating that there was no such crisis arising from the notices.

What Should You Do If You Receive an SIR Notice?

Electors who receive a notice can submit their response and the required supporting documents before the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Booth Level Officer (BLO).

The authorities have clarified that the list of documents prescribed by the Election Commission is indicative and not exhaustive.

This means that the documents listed by the Election Commission are not necessarily the only documents that can be considered.

The ERO, as the statutory authority responsible for deciding the matter, will examine each case individually. The decision will take into account the documents submitted by the elector as well as the report prepared by the BLO.

Voters who receive a notice should therefore carefully check the information mentioned in the notice and submit their response within the prescribed process.

Delhi SIR: Important Dates for Claims and Objections

The current SIR schedule contains several important dates that Delhi voters should keep in mind.

Claims and objections submitted by September 30, 2026, are scheduled to be processed by October 29, 2026.

The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on November 4, 2026.

The process of deciding notices issued during the SIR exercise is therefore expected to conclude before publication of the final electoral roll.

Delhi Receives 84,263 Form-6 Applications Between August 31 and September 19

The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s daily SIR bulletin reported that 84,263 Form-6 applications were submitted across Delhi between August 31 and September 19.

This was in addition to 2,12,400 Form-6 applications received up to August 30.

Form-6 is used by eligible citizens to apply for inclusion of their names in the electoral roll.

During the August 31 to September 19 period, authorities also received:

  • 174 Form-6A applications
  • 1,396 Form-7 applications
  • 29,705 Form-8 applications

The figures indicate the volume of voter-related applications being processed during the SIR exercise.

What Is Form-6 Used For?

Form-6 is used by eligible citizens seeking inclusion of their names in the electoral roll.

The Delhi CEO’s office has advised residents to verify their names in the draft electoral roll. If an eligible person’s name is missing, the voter can submit Form-6 along with the required declaration and supporting documents.

People who will attain the age of 18 years on or before October 1, 2026, are also eligible to apply through Form-6.

This makes the form particularly relevant for new voters becoming eligible to register during the current revision exercise.

What Is Form-8 Used For?

Form-8 is used for corrections or changes relating to an existing electoral-roll entry.

According to the Delhi CEO’s latest information, Form-8 can be used when a voter needs to make changes such as an address correction or other permitted corrections to an existing electoral-roll record.

Voters should carefully verify the information in the draft roll and use the appropriate form depending on whether they need a new registration or a correction to an existing entry.

Special Camps Scheduled Across Delhi

The Delhi CEO’s office has also scheduled special camps at polling-station locations to provide electoral services to residents.

According to the information released by the CEO’s office, special camps were scheduled for September 20 and September 27, 2026.

These camps are intended to help citizens access electoral services and address issues related to their voter records during the revision process.

What Happens After the Claims and Objections Process?

The next major stage is the processing of claims and objections submitted by voters.

According to the latest schedule, claims and objections submitted by September 30 will be processed by October 29.

The final electoral roll is then scheduled to be published on November 4, 2026.

Until the prescribed process is completed, receiving an SIR notice should not be treated as a final deletion of a voter’s name.

The key distinction is between receiving a notice for verification and a formal order deleting a name from the electoral roll.

Delhi SIR Voter Notice: Key Takeaway

The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer has made it clear that an SIR notice is not an automatic deletion notice.

Voters who receive notices have an opportunity to respond and submit supporting documents. The concerned ERO will consider the available information, including the elector’s response and the BLO’s report, before making a decision.

The authorities have also stated that no voter can be deleted without an opportunity to be heard and a proper, speaking and appealable order.

Delhi voters should therefore check their names in the draft electoral roll, review any notice carefully if received, and submit the required response or application within the applicable deadline.

The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on November 4, 2026.
