PM Modi Free Online Coaching Plan: Joshi Reviews

New Delhi, August 20, 2026: Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday reviewed the implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recently announced free online coaching initiative for competitive examinations, with senior Education Ministry officials. The proposed programme aims to reduce the financial burden of private coaching and expand access to quality exam preparation for students across India.

The review meeting comes days after Modi announced the initiative during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15. The Prime Minister said the government would use India’s digital public infrastructure, teachers and educational talent to build a nationwide network offering free coaching for various examinations.

During the meeting, Joshi discussed the implementation framework for the Prime Minister’s free online coaching initiative with senior officials of the Department of Higher Education.

In a post on X, Joshi said the discussion focused on “building a robust national platform that makes high-quality learning content, expert guidance and structured preparation accessible to students across the country.”

The emphasis on a national platform indicates that the government is looking to create an organised ecosystem rather than simply provide individual online courses. Details such as the examinations to be covered, eligibility criteria, content providers, platform architecture and launch timeline are yet to be formally announced.

What PM Modi Announced on Independence Day

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said coaching classes had become a financial burden for poor and middle-class families.

“Coaching classes burden the poor and the middle class. We will provide free online coaching for various exams,” Modi said during his Independence Day speech.

He also highlighted the social pressure surrounding private coaching, saying many parents feel that sending their children to coaching classes has become a matter of prestige.

Modi said the proposed initiative could help families save substantial amounts spent on coaching while allowing students to remain closer to their homes and families.

“We have digital public infrastructure; we have excellent talent and teachers,” the Prime Minister said, outlining the government’s plan to bring these resources together to create a comprehensive free coaching network for young people.

Free Coaching Initiative Targets Cost Barrier

Private coaching has become a major expense for students preparing for high-stakes examinations. For many aspirants, particularly those from lower-income and middle-class households, coaching fees, study material, accommodation and relocation costs can add significantly to the overall cost of preparation.

The proposed government platform is intended to address the accessibility and affordability aspects of competitive-exam preparation.

However, the government has not yet specified which competitive examinations will be included in the initiative or whether the platform will cover examinations such as UPSC, JEE, NEET, SSC, banking and other recruitment tests.

Education Reforms Gain Focus After Exam Controversies

The free coaching announcement comes at a time when India’s competitive examination system has faced intense public scrutiny.

Student protests in Delhi and elsewhere over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and wider examination reforms had placed questions of transparency, accountability and student welfare at the centre of the education debate.

The Cockroach Janta Party-led protest at Jantar Mantar had demanded, among other measures, the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The government later accepted Pradhan’s resignation on July 25, and President Droupadi Murmu assigned the Education Ministry’s additional charge to Pralhad Joshi.

Joshi subsequently took charge of the Education Ministry and has held meetings focused on strengthening the National Testing Agency and improving the examination ecosystem.

The latest review therefore comes as the ministry works on both immediate examination reforms and longer-term measures aimed at improving access to education and preparation resources.

What Happens Next?

The immediate priority will be to translate the Prime Minister’s announcement into a functioning national platform. Key details are expected to include the examinations covered, course structure, faculty and content partners, test series, doubt-resolution mechanisms, language support and the process through which students can register.

The success of the initiative will ultimately depend not only on making coaching content free but also on ensuring that students receive reliable study material, expert guidance, regular assessments and structured preparation.

For millions of competitive-exam aspirants, the government’s move could significantly change the cost and accessibility of exam preparation if implemented at scale.
